Understanding Life in Gaza: A Personal Reflection from Yamen Nashwan

Introduction

In the heart of Gaza, life has been profoundly altered by ongoing conflict and hardship. I am Yamen Nashwan, and I wish to share my personal journey — a narrative of resilience, loss, and hope amidst the turmoil. This is a reflection on life before October 7th, capturing the stark realities faced by many residents, and the emotional toll of living in a conflict zone.

Memories of Peace and Normalcy

Before the chaos erupted, life in Gaza was filled with the simple joys of daily routines. I was an athlete, passionate about basketball and volleyball. My days were spent training, socializing, and dreaming of futures beyond the borders of this small land. The community I cherished was vibrant, and life was familiar and hopeful.

The Dawn of Conflict

The morning of October 7th remains etched vividly in my memory. I awoke to the terrifying sounds of bombings and explosions that shook my home and rattled my heart. These sirens of destruction shattered the sense of safety that once defined our lives. Nighttimes, which once offered rest, now often bring restless thoughts—sometimes feeling like distant dreams rather than reality.

Physical and Emotional Transformation

The impact of conflict has taken a severe toll on my physical health. I have lost nearly half my body weight and now struggle even to lift myself to eat. Once a robust athlete, my strength has diminished dramatically. The violence has robbed many of us of our vitality, leaving us with only one meal a day and scarce resources.

Emotionally, I have experienced profound loss. During this war, I have grieved the deaths of many close friends — my companions, my brothers in sport and life. Each news of a friend’s martyrdom cuts deep, leaving a sense of emptiness and a feeling of being dead inside. The memories of shared moments, the laughter, and the camaraderie now haunt my mind and eyes.

Concern for Family and Limited Resources

The trauma extends to my family, especially my father. When the occupation’s bombs rendered him unable to walk, my world was shattered further. He has high blood pressure and diabetes, conditions worsened by the scarcity of medical resources and nutritious food. The few painkillers available are mild, while stronger medications are prohibitively expensive.

One night, I was awakened by my father’s moans and cries of pain. That moment marked a turning point in my life—a stark reminder of our vulnerability and the urgent need for compassion and assistance.

Conclusion

Living in Gaza amid ongoing conflict has transformed not only our bodies but also our spirits. Despite these hardships, stories like mine serve as a testament to resilience and the unyielding desire for peace and stability. We remain hopeful that someday, our suffering will lead to a better future for Gaza and its people.

Author’s Note

Sharing my story is an attempt to shed light on the human face of Gaza’s struggles. It is a call for awareness, empathy, and support. Every individual’s narrative contributes to a larger understanding of the true cost of conflict and the resilience of those who endure it daily.
