One instance of an incredibly trivial grudge involved two colleagues at an office I worked at a few years ago. Let’s call them Alice and Bob. Alice once brought in a homemade chocolate cake for a colleague’s birthday celebration. Bob, who was known for his love of sweets, took a slice of Alice’s cake and commented that it was “pretty good, but not as good as his grandmother used to make.”

This seemingly innocuous comment seemed to plant a seed of resentment in Alice, as she was quite proud of her baking skills. After that, Alice avoided offering Bob any baked goods she brought into the office. This small incident evolved into a minor cold war, where Alice would subtly showcase her baking endeavors to everyone except Bob. Meanwhile, Bob remained completely oblivious to the cold shoulder treatment and continued enjoying store-bought sweets without any inkling of Alice’s discontent.

The rest of us found it mildly amusing that such a trivial remark could result in such a petty and long-lasting grudge. It was only after Alice changed departments that the situation faded, while the story remained a lighthearted reminder of how small slights can sometimes leave surprisingly deep impressions.
