Living in Hardship: A Reflection on Life in Gaza Amid Crisis
For over fifteen days, I have been living in a makeshift tent, a symbol of resilience amidst profound hardship. Every day brings new challenges, and with them, a growing sense of loss of fundamental rights and dignities that many take for granted.
Our existence has been reduced to reliance on limited and often inaccessible aid. The food we receive is scarce and expensive—a reflection of the economic hardships faced across Gaza. We mostly sustain ourselves on basic staples: dried lentils, fava beans, and canned luncheon meat that, frankly, even animals might avoid. These meals are far from nutritious, yet they are all we can afford on most days.
Accompanying me are my young nieces and nephews, whose innocent curiosity and hope are heartbreaking under these circumstances. As we visit local markets, their tiny fingers reach out toward vibrant displays of fresh vegetables and fruits. Their eyes brighten with longing as they ask, “When will we eat apples? When can we taste tomatoes and oranges?” Watching them dream of something as simple as fresh produce is both uplifting and agonizing because I know I have no immediate answers for their innocent questions.
My father, already injured, and my mother, fighting illness, desperately need nutritious food to aid their recovery. Medical professionals have emphasized the importance of a healthy diet, but in practice, providing such essentials remains an unattainable goal most days.
The pain and exhaustion we see in their eyes are deeply heartbreaking. They try to be strong for me, yet I see their health decline daily. Our life in this overcrowded tent is increasingly unbearable. The biting cold seeps into our bones, and recent heavy rains flooded our shelter, saturating our clothes, bedding, and possessions. We are left without dry, safe spaces to rest, and find ourselves caught in a relentless cycle of discomfort and despair.
Living under these circumstances underscores the urgent need for sustained humanitarian aid, improved living conditions, and a resolution to the ongoing crisis. Every individual hopes for a future where dignity, safety, and basic rights are restored, and the suffering inflicted by years of conflict and blockade can finally come to an end.
