The Rising Cost of Living in Gaza: A Personal Reflection Amidst Ongoing Hardships

Gaza—once again, I find myself compelled to share the realities facing so many of us living here. As a resident of Gaza, I am continually reminded of the relentless challenges we endure daily. The ongoing conflict shows no signs of resolution, and recent failed negotiations have deepened our collective sense of despair. With the approach of winter, bringing rain and cold temperatures, the difficulties only intensify.
Every day feels like carrying a growing mountain on my back. The economic situation continues to deteriorate, with prices skyrocketing at an alarming rate. Basic necessities—food, medicine, and other essentials—are becoming increasingly unaffordable, making daily survival an arduous task.
Recently, I experienced a personal health ordeal. I contracted Hepatitis A, likely due to contaminated water and food sources. I endured high fever, body pains, and itchy yellow eyes, spending two difficult days in the hospital. Contrary to what one might imagine, I was not confined to a bed; instead, I was on the floor amidst other injured individuals— a scene hauntingly unforgettable. It is a sight I would not wish upon anyone.
My primary concern remains the health and well-being of my father, who is particularly vulnerable due to his age, diabetes, and a recent leg injury caused by the ongoing conflict. His suffering is severe, and I am constantly worried about his access to adequate pain relief. The rising prices make it increasingly difficult to procure necessary medications, especially stronger painkillers vital for his condition.
The economic blockade and military occupation have severely impacted our access to basic resources. Market prices for vegetables, fruits, and meat have soared, making it challenging for families like ours to meet daily needs. The escalation in food and medicine costs, combined with frequent displacement to unsafe areas, leaves us feeling overwhelmed and helpless.
Despite these hardships, I remain hopeful that the international community will recognize our plight and work towards a resolution. Meanwhile, we, the people of Gaza, continue to endure, facing each day with resilience and the hope for a better future.
This is the reality we live with—a mountain of worries that grows heavier with each passing day. Yet, in the face of adversity, we hold on to our hope for peace and stability.
