A secret I’ve held close to my heart, planning to take it to the grave, is an embarrassing college incident. During my final year, while presenting my thesis in front of the entire department, I experienced a technology glitch. My laptop, housing my entire presentation, suddenly crashed, and I had no backups. Frantic and panicking, I resorted to improvisation, using my notes and memory to present an important research project that I’d spent months working on. What no one but my close friend knew was that even though I managed to scrape through and earn commendable grades, my entire presentation was full of hastily generated data and visualizations—none of the graphs or visuals represented the thorough, evidence-backed work I had done. I was concerned the faculty would notice the inconsistency, but remarkably, my improvisational skills and verbal explanations held through convincingly. To this day, every time I stand to present, I make sure to have multiple backups and double-check that all devices are in proper working order.
