Horrifying Update on the Crisis in Sudan: Over 8.6 Million Refugees Face Starvation

GENEVA – As the conflict in Sudan marks its two-year anniversary, UN human rights experts have issued a dire warning about the devastating hunger crisis facing the nation, signaling a severe increase in acute malnutrition among its population.

According to the experts, Sudan is currently experiencing the worst hunger crisis on the planet. They emphasized the critical need for urgent humanitarian assistance, stating that “without immediate intervention, hundreds of thousands may face death.”

The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread famine, mass displacement, and extreme acts of violence, impacting millions of lives. Approximately 24.6 million people—nearly half of Sudan’s population—are grappling with extreme food insecurity, with 638,000 individuals facing catastrophic levels of hunger, marking a disturbing record high.

Children are particularly vulnerable, caught in the relentless turmoil caused by aerial bombardments and ongoing shelling. They are not only suffering physical injuries but are also enduring severe impacts on their education and overall well-being.

Experts report that the conflict has led to unprecedented levels of displacement, with 8.6 million individuals internally uprooted since the beginning of hostilities, and nearly 4 million fleeing to neighboring countries. This displaced population faces overwhelming challenges, seeking basic shelter and safety amid the ongoing war that continues to wreak havoc on their lives.

“The mass displacement of farmers is exacerbating a grim cycle of agricultural collapse, hunger, and escalating violence as people compete for dwindling resources,” the experts commented. The destruction of farmland has resulted in significantly reduced food supplies, pushing an increasing number of people into famine conditions.

The agricultural sector has suffered tremendous setbacks, with two consecutive farming seasons either severely disrupted or underutilized due to the ongoing conflict. Essential supply routes have been compromised, farmland has been destroyed, and crucial agricultural equipment has been stolen. With two-thirds of the population relying on agriculture for their sustenance and livelihoods, there is an urgent need for assistance as the critical planting season approaches in June.

“Prices for staple foods remain exorbitant, with sorghum and wheat flour costing over 100% more than they did in early 2024, placing essential nourishment beyond the reach of millions,” the experts warned.
