There is a particular social norm that I find quite disagreeable: the expectation to always smile and maintain a positive demeanor, regardless of the situation. While it’s understandable that creating a pleasant social atmosphere can be beneficial, this expectation often leads to inauthentic interactions where individuals feel pressured to mask their true emotions. For many, a constant demand to appear cheerful can be exhausting and dismissive of genuine feelings. This “forced positivity” undermines honest communication and can invalidate personal struggles, ultimately making meaningful connections more difficult to establish. Encouraging more authentic interactions ensures people can express themselves freely and honestly without the pressure of meeting imposed social standards.
