Sensing the awkwardness and realizing it was escalating, I quickly checked my phone, pretended to receive a notification, and announced that I had a very important delivery scheduled for that evening—something I completely fabricated on the spot. I even went as far as to apologize profusely for the sudden departure, mumbling about a fragile package that would get returned if I wasn’t there to receive it. It was absurd but effective; everyone understood the urgency of missing a delivery, and it allowed me to exit gracefully without causing further discomfort.
