When do you predict that technology will enable direct brain-to-phone connections, eliminating the need for visual interaction?

The concept of connecting phones directly to our brains is rooted in the idea of creating a seamless interface between human cognition and digital devices, often referred to as brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) or brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). Several companies and research institutions are making strides in this field, with notable examples including Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk, and academic efforts from institutions like MIT and Stanford.

However, this technology is still in the early stages of development. Current advancements primarily focus on medical applications, such as helping individuals with paralysis communicate or control prosthetics. These systems typically involve external sensors and are not yet sophisticated enough for seamless integration with consumer electronics like smartphones.

For a consumer-ready product that allows for direct interaction with smartphones through brain signals without visual engagement, there are several significant hurdles: the non-invasive nature of the interface (avoiding surgical implants), bandwidth and data processing capability, user safety, and ethical/legal considerations regarding privacy and mental data.

Considering these challenges, it is difficult to predict a specific year when such technology will become widely available. Optimistically, with rapid advancements and possibly exponential growth in neurotechnology, rudimentary versions could appear within two to three decades. However, achieving a level of convenience, safety, and efficiency comparable to opening one’s eyes to use a phone might take longer. Thus, while developments in this area are promising, they are more likely to contribute to incremental improvements in human-computer interaction rather than a near-term revolutionary shift.
